What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is the modulation of the local cellular environment at the site of an injury in efforts to help signal the body to heal itself. This is accomplished through the introduction of bioactive molecules and/or stem cells which can help initiate and promote tissue healing by stimulating host stem cell migration, cell proliferation, angiogenesis (blood vessel formation), and extracellular matrix synthesis (elastin, collagen, etc.). These bioactive molecules and/or cells can be harvested from either the patient's own body (autologous treatments), or from a donor that is not the patient (allogeneic treatments).

Autologous & Allogeneic Regenerative Cell Therapies

When a patient receives an autologous regenerative treatment they are acting as both the donor and the recipient. The upside to this is treatment can be performed without the risk of rejection and does not require tissue cryopreservation. The downside however is that the harvesting portion of treatment can be quite invasive, depending on the tissue source (blood, bone marrow, adipose tissue). While autologous treatments may offer tremendous promise, the quality and quantity of our own stem cells and healing molecules can become limited over time. As we age our bodies produce less stem cells over time and the function of these aging stem cells ultimately diminishes as well. Thankfully, when the aging process inevitably does occur, there are now sterile, FDA regulated, and ethically sound allogeneic treatment options that may offer additional hope for patients suffering from the signs and symptoms of aging and injury.

Regenerative Cell Therapies show enormous promise, however much of the science and supporting data is still in its developmental stage.  Professional judgment and clinician expertise is needed to utilize Autologous and/or Allogeneic cell products for any therapeutic use. CytoVive urges anyone embarking on the use of Regenerative Cell Therapies to consult with their doctors, and FDA publications to get the most current evaluation of any regenerative cell therapy
